Ya que mi compañera DARYA está hablando de SUNROOF!, aprovecho para re-subir este material relacionado con el autor del proyecto y, de esta forma, divulgar y difundir su obra altruistamente, tal y como SIEMPRE hacemos en este blog. Digo ésto porque en su día fui acusado de hacer "contrabando" de material sonoro... En fin...

TOTAL fue formado por MATTHEW BOWER después de la ruptura del proyecto PURE. Originalmente el proyecto estaba orientado hacia el sonido electrónico industrial-noise y recibió la ayuda ocasional de miembros de RAMLEH y AKE. Con el paso de los años y, adentrándose en la última parte de los años 80, el sonido del grupo se "guitarrizó" aunque no dejó ese clima experimental que lo caracterizaba. Para continuar trabajando en la electrónica, Matthew formó el proyecto SKULLFLOWER, el cual significó la muerte de TOTAL. 

En la década de 1990, Matthew Bower volvió bajo el nombre TOTAL para editar su música al margen de SKULLFLOWER, uniéndose JOHN GODBERT para convertir el proyecto en un dúo. 

Con la entrada del nuevo milenio, TOTAL desapareció y actualmente están reeditando grabaciones inéditas de sus primeros tiempos, aunque Matthew Bower sigue trabajando bajo el nombre de SUNROOF!, un proyecto de sonido experimental que trabaja en muchos campos de la experimentación, desde el noise hasta el rock, pasando por el industrial, las grabaciones de campo, los collages sonoros, etc...

La cassette que os propongo es mi favorita, un trabajo editado por los divinos BROKEN FLAG y que resume muy bien las ideas sonoras de Bower en aquellos años.

Ramleh: Awake! (Broken Flag, BF40, 6xcassette compilation boxset, 1985, MP3)

Ramleh is a seminal British noise project founded in 1982 by its only constant member Gary Mundy. Mundy was a pioneer in the power electronics genre and an important figure in the development of noise music. He created the legendary cult label Broken Flag Records as a means of spreading the bizarre atonal audial perversities of a handful of whackos from around the world, including the likes of Controlled Bleeding, Consumer Electronics, Con-Dom, Maurizio Bianchi and Matthew Bower projects Skullflower and Total. Ramleh also worked primarily through Broken Flag at this time, releasing almost exclusively on cassette format for their initial run of 1982-84. Based on recordings of live improvisational performances, early Ramleh was extremely influential in the development of power electronics and harsh noise, setting the standards for many groups and artists to come. While it's obvious that there was little to no musicianship or songcraft involved in the making of this material, its abrasiveness and fierce DIY ethic created a strange and fascinating aesthetic. The "Awake" 6 tape set (originally released in 1985 but recently reissued as part of a Broken Flag retrospective) covers virtually everything recorded in Ramleh's initial power electronics phase. It's quite a lot of material to sift through, but has an interesting allure and atmosphere and for some fanatics is worth listening to in its entirety.

As with the majority of 80s power electronics (most of which had some association with Broken Flag), the recording here is incredibly dull and buried in tape hiss. Also, most of the material was recorded in live performances, so nothing sounds in the least bit polished. The music is made up of little more than distortion, feedback and vocals running through effects. These sounds may be used to create a low rumbling pulse, spasms of piercing noise, waves of screeching feedback, and everything in between. The vocals are never without effects, and are usually barbaric (albeit muffled) yells. The vocals may be used in pulsating repetitive sections or chaotic spastic sections, but usually don't appear in the more ambient rumblings. Pulses of sound sometimes create a rhythm-like backbone, which along with the dull analog production makes the link between early Ramleh and early industrial (such as the live recordings of the mighty Throbbing Gristle) pretty clear. In fact, it wouldn't be a great leap to say early Ramleh and many of their contemporaries simply were industrial music. However, later on the term power electronics came into common usage, and the harsher groups got the larger the distinction from industrial music became, especially considering the modern connotations of the genre (*cough* goth wimps and fags like Trent Reznor *cough*).

"Awake!" covers hours of material across 6 tapes, and is more like a historical record than a release to be taken in all at once (much like Throbbing Gristle's excellent TG24 live collection). However, eventually scaling all its material may be rewarding for the noise freak or curious party (myself fitting in more with the latter). Broken Flag Records put out a good deal of interesting material, but it is perhaps their dark, grimy, dingy DIY aesthetic and cult status more than the music associated with them that draws in the weirdos like flies. 80s power electronics represented a polar extreme; while industrial was created essentially to strip down aggressive music to purely mechanical components, bands like Ramleh sought to degenerate that notion to the level of non-music. It is indeed a fascinating idea, and the harshness and dull, atonal textures found here may tickle the fancy of a few strange folks. It's highly unlikely that many will enjoy this material or anything out of the Broken Flag catalogue, but there are those fanatics who will investigate it with a keen ear and maybe find something they dig.

As for Ramleh's career after 1984, Mundy would embark on a turbulent journey and change his style pretty drastically with the help of a few guest musicians such as Phillip Best (of Consumer Electronics and Whitehouse) and the high and mighty drummer Stuart Dennison (of Skullflower fame). In fact, in Ramleh's second incarnation in 1987, they would play what would become the precursor to Skullfower's dull, hazy repetitive stoner rock/noise-ish sound (*see my review of Skullflower - Birthdeath for more info on that). And by the '90-'98 era there was little distinction between Ramleh and Skullflower. So stay tuned for more on Ramleh's legacy. Next stop, the transition from noise to guitar-based music.

Seguimos posteando cosillas del sello BROKEN FLAG, esta vez con otro precioso material del italiano MAURIZIO BIANCHI, un vinilo de dos largos temas editado en una limitadísima tirada de 300 ejemplares y con el subtítulo "This record is dedicated to all the redeemed people". Como decía, dos largos temas de angostos ambientes electrónicos, llevados magistralmente entre lo industrial y la pesadilla, algo que sólo saben hacer genios de la altura de BIANCHI. Un disco que ha adquirido mucho valor entre los coleccionistas y por el que se piden buenas cifras en el mercado de segunda mano.

A raíz de la magnífica cassette posteada por STAHLFABRIK (la primera de RAMLEH y la primera referencia también de BROKEN FLAG, el sello fundado por uno de los miembros de la banda, GARY MUNDY) he buscado en lossless algunas referencias de estos cafres. La mejor forma, creo, de agradecerle al capo mayor de este blog sus desvelos por nuestros hambrientos oídos. 

No he encontrado la susodicha cassette como tal, pero en la búsqueda han aparecido una serie de recopilatorios con material de la primera época, temas aparecidos en otros recopilatorios...y en el primero de ellos están contenidos,en el mismo orden, los 5 primeros cortes de la cassette (cara A completa y primero de la cara B)...

Entre otras cosas, nuestra seguidora SARAH nos ha pedido esta cassette-split organizada por BROKEN FLAG y protagonizado por dos bestias sagradas del sonido indistrial británico: CONTROLLED BLEEDING y UNCOMMUNITY. La cara A contiene un tema de 12 minutos a cargo de los Controlled Bleeding y la cara B lleva 44 minutos de Uncommunity divididos en 7 temazos.

La búsqueda de este impresionante material ha dado frutos enseguida, pero no ha sido posible, hasta la fecha, encontrarlo en lossless, por lo tanto si alguien dispone de esta cinta en FLAC o en una mejor compresión de MP3, se agradecerá.

Volvemos a los sonidos más experimentales de la música ndustrial.

Os presento esta caja que incluye cinco compactos-digipacks y un grueso libreto, de la caja de vinilos publicada hace años por Vinyl on Demand (2007). Broken Flag es un influyente sello nacido en 1982 (Gran Bretaña) bajo la influencia de la música Industrial y sobre todo del power electronics de leyendas como Whitehouse. Pronto se convirtió en referencia de estas músicas publicando discos de artistas internacionales. Fundado y dirigido por Gary Mundy (responsable de RAMLEH, grupo recuperado recientemente y en activo), Broken Flag celebró su 30 aniversario reuniendo a un buen numero de grupos y artistas que editó en los ochenta en un festival en Londres (en mayo de este año) que duró tres dias: gente como New Blockaders, Consumer Electronics, Giancarlo Toniutti, e incluso Esplendor Geométrico, que llegaron a publicar un tema en una famosa recopilación del sello (Neuengamme). Esta edición ha coincidido con el festival también como celebración. Los cinco compactos incluyen temas de Maurizio Bianchi, Mauthausen Orchestra, Kleistwahr, Allies, Ramleh, Male Rape Group, Controlled Bleeding, Giancarlo Toniutti, Le Syndicat y Un-Kommuniti. Presentación lujosa y diseño muy cuidado. Imprescindible para todo buen seguidor del mejor noise, power electronics e industrial experimental extremo.
